HIGH-PERFORMANCE 8-BIT ADC WITH ON-CHIP TRACK/HOLD CONVERTS AT 600Msps

SUNNYVALE, CA-June 22, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX106, an 8-bit monolithic bipolar analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 600Msps digitizing rate.

The MAX106 is pin-compatible with the MAX104, a 1Gsps ADC, allowing easy upgrades. It is ideal for high-speed communication, instrumentation, and data-acquisition applications where wide bandwidth, good linearity, and high dynamic performance at lower sampling rates are required.

Unlike other high-speed 8-bit ADCs, the MAX106 achieves a full 47.8dB SINAD and 57.5dB SFDR at 300MHz input (Nyquist) frequency. For both these parameters, the MAX106 maintains the same performance levels, within 0.1dB, out to twice Nyquist (i.e., 1GHz) input frequency.

The MAX106 achieves this high performance through both innovative design and the use of Maxim's proprietary 27GHz GST-2 bipolar process. An integrated, fully differential input track/hold (T/H) employs Schottky diodes and laser-trimmed resistors to achieve a typical INL and DNL of less than ±0.25LSB, a full-power bandwidth of 2.2GHz, and less than 1ps aperture jitter. The MAX106 further improves performance through the use of a proprietary on-chip decoding scheme, ensuring a low 1-in-1015 clock cycle occurrence of metastable states with no error exceeding 1LSB.

Proper packaging is also critical to achieving good performance at these frequencies. The MAX106 uses a 25x25x1.4mm, 192-contact ESBGA™ (Enhanced Super Ball-Grid Array) package to minimize parasitic effects, provide controlled impedance signal paths, and eliminate the need for heatsinking in most applications.

To facilitate digital interface, the device features an on-chip, selectable 8:16 output demultiplexer that slows the 600Msps data to 300 M-words/S ported to two parallel, differential 8-bit, low-voltage (PECL) outputs. Single port operation is also supported at full 600Msps sampling rates. Data is presented in offset binary format and includes an output clock and overrange bit. The MAX106 operates from ±5V supplies and supports 3V to 5V output interfaces.

The MAX106 comes specified for the commercial (0°C to +70°C) temperature range and is priced from $286.58 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit, which includes the MAX106 device, is available ($650.00).
