MAXIM ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S LOWEST-POWER 5V, 10.7Gbps LASER DRIVER

SUNNYVALE, CA—November 7, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3930, the industry’s lowest-power 10.7Gbps laser diode driver. This product expands Maxim’s wide physical media product line into high-performance OC-192 territory using Maxim’s second-generation, in-house SiGe process technology. The MAX3930 is designed to directly modulate laser diodes at data rates up to 10.7Gbps while needing only 108mA from a single +5.0V or -5.2V supply. This device is ideal for long-reach optical transmitter applications within SDH/SONET, DWDM, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet systems.

The MAX3930 laser driver consists of a high-speed modulation driver, laser-biasing block, and a pulse-width adjustment control circuit. The driver receives differential CML signals with 50-ohm on-chip line terminations. It is able to deliver a laser modulation current of 20mA to 100mA with an edge speed of 25ps. The high-bandwidth, fully differential signal path is internally implemented to minimize jitter accumulations. When a clock signal is available, the integrated data retiming function can be selected to improve signal performance. The integrated bias circuit provides a programmable current up to 100mA.

The MAX3930 is available in die form and operates from a single +5.0V or -5.2V supply over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range. The MAX3930E/D is priced at $155 (1000-up factory direct, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
