ULTRA-SMALL CURRENT-SENSE AMPLIFIER FITS IN TINY SC70 PACKAGE

SUNNYVALE, CA-June 1, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX4073 low-cost, precision, high-side current-sense amplifier in a tiny SC70 package (only half the footprint of a SOT23). Using a small, high-side, external sense resistor, the MAX4073 provides a voltage output proportional to the current being sensed. Internal resistors are trimmed to provide accurate gains of 20V/V, 50V/V, or 100V/V (designated by the suffix letter T, F, or H). They have typical full-scale accuracy of 0.5%. High-side current monitoring is especially useful in battery-powered systems, because it does not interfere with the ground path of the battery charger. The input common-mode range is from 2V up to 28V, allowing operation with a variety of batteries and wall-cube chargers (which can generate higher voltages when the battery is removed).

The combination of three gain versions and a user-selectable external sense resistor sets the full-scale current reading. This flexibility and the SC70 package provide a high level of integration, resulting in a simple and compact current-sense solution ideal for notebook computers, PDAs, and PA current sensing in cell phones. The MAX4073's wide 1.8MHz bandwidth makes it suitable for use inside battery-charger control loops.

The MAX4073 operates from a single +3V to +28V supply and draws only 500µA quiescent current. The MAX4073 comes in a 5-pin SC70 package and is specified for the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). Prices start at $0.70 (2500-up, factory direct, FOB USA).
