Li+ BATTERY-PACK PROTECTOR PREVENTS VOLTAGE AND CHARGE FAULTS

SUNNYVALE, CA—January 17, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1665, which provides complete protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, cell shorts, overcharge, and overdischarge currents for lithium-ion (Li+) battery packs with 2, 3, or 4 series cells. On-chip power MOSFET drivers control external N-channel MOSFETs to reliably disconnect the cells from the pack terminals when a fault condition occurs. Designing battery-pack safety circuitry is now simplified: Just select your power MOSFETs, and connect your Li+ cells.

The MAX1665 has a ±1% accurate, factory-trimmed, 4.3V overvoltage threshold limit, and there is no current-sense resistor or its associated voltage drop. The MAX1665 can directly connect to battery voltages as high as 20V without an external linear regulator. It is also a true "micropower" device, consuming only 15µA in operation and <1µA in shutdown.

These battery protectors are available in three versions: the MAX1665S for packs with 2 series cells, the MAX1665V for 3 series cells, and the MAX1665X for 4 series cells. All devices are available in 8-pin narrow SO packages and are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices for the 4-cell protector start from $1.55 (1000-up, FOB USA).
