TINY CHIP-SCALE PA FOR BLUETOOTH +20dBm POWER CLASS I APPLICATION

Note to Editors: This is the first PA on the market that was designed specifically for Bluetooth Class I radios. No other PA has four power control steps (Class I requirement) or can match the MAX2240 size of 2.43 sq. mm. The 0.5mm pitch, 9-pin (3 x 3) CSP represents the latest technology in RFIC packaging.

SUNNYVALE, CA—March 23, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX2240 2.4GHz, 100mW power amplifier, the industry’s smallest PA for Bluetooth Power Class I radios. Available in a 0.5mm pitch, 9-pin (3 x 3 array) chip-scale package (CSP), this PA occupies just 2.43mm2 board space, only 16% of the space required by the competition’s 8-pin MSOP package. The +20dBm output power allows users to extend the radio link range to 100 meters, ideal for Bluetooth devices operating in changing environments, such as notebook PCs, cellular phones, and access points. The MAX2240 can also be used for HomeRF, 802.11 FHSS, and other 2.4GHz proprietary ISM-band radio applications.

The MAX2240 features a digital power-control function, allowing the user to reduce the transmit power in 6dB steps down to +4dBm or less, complying with Bluetooth Power Class I specifications. The device features an integrated 50 ohm matching impedance, further reducing external components and required board space. The MAX2240 operates on a single +2.7V to +5.0V supply and draws only 105mA. A 1µA low-power shutdown mode helps to reduce power consumption and extend battery life.

Pricing starts from $1.75 (1000-up, FOB USA). A fully assembled evaluation kit (MAX2240EVKIT) is available to help reduce design time.
