INDUSTRY'S SMALLEST INTEGRATED POWER IC FOR CDMA PHONE HANDSETS

SUNNYVALE, CA—June 26, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1798/MAX1799 five-output power supplies for W-CDMA cellular/PCS handsets, compatible with a variety of available CDMA chipsets. Each IC contains five low-noise low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs), a serial interface to control and program each output voltage, a 140ms min. reset timer, a watch dog input, optional push-on/push-off power control, and two high-current open-drain outputs (for driving a vibrator motor and/or backlight LEDs). The two devices differ only in their serial interface: The MAX1798 has a 3-wire SPI-compatible interface, whereas the MAX1799 features a 2-wire I2C-compatible interface.

The main regulator (LDO1) is rated for 300mA output current, while the other four are rated for 150mA. All LDOs are optimized for high accuracy, high channel-to-channel isolation, low noise, and low dropout voltage. At two-thirds of rated output current, dropout is 75mV for LDO1 and 50mV for LDOs 2–5. The serial interface can individually enable, disable, and program each output voltage to any of 32 voltages from 1.8V to 3.3V. For added system protection, each LDO has independent current limiting and thermal overload protection.

The MAX1798/MAX1799 come in 2.1W, space-saving 20-pin TSSOP packages, making them the most compact solutions available for CDMA handset power. The parts are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start from $2.30 (1000 up, FOB USA). A preassembled evaluation kit (MAX1799EVKIT) and software are available to help reduce design time.
