3V, 1µA MULTIPROTOCOL INTERFACE
Note to Editors: The MAX3160/MAX3161/MAX3162 are the industrys first 3V, 1µA multiprotocol ICs to combine both RS-232 and RS-485/RS-422 compliance in a single chip. The shutdown mode decreases supply current to 1µA while the receivers remain active.
SUNNYVALE, CA—April 11, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3160MAX3162 family of multiprotocol interface devices designed for networking, point of sales, and industrial equipment. These devices expand end-product capability by allowing "the box" to communicate using either the RS-232 or RS-485/RS-422 standard. The MAX3160 is optimized for multiprotocol operation on a single interface bus; the MAX3161 is a better choice when using a single UART and separate interface bus; and the MAX3162 is ideal for applications that require both the RS-232 and RS-485/RS-422 protocols, such as a protocol translator.
RS-232 or RS-485/RS-422 operation is pin-programmable on the MAX3160/MAX3161, while the MAX3162 has dedicated RS-232 and RS-485/RS-422 I/O pins to allow data transmission using both protocols simultaneously. All devices feature a low-dropout output stage, allowing operation from a single +3V to +5.5V supply. Supply current drops to 1µA in shutdown mode while the RS-232 receiver inputs remain active. Other features of the MAX3160 family are: pin-programmable slew-rate limiting to reduce EMI, pin-programmable half- or full-duplex operation (MAX3160/MAX3161), pin-programmable FAST operation allowing RS-232-compliant data rates up to 1Mbps or RS-485/RS-422 data rates up to 10Mbps, and true fail-safe receivers to ensure a logic-high output when the inputs are shorted or open.
All devices in the MAX3160 family are available in both the commercial and extended temperature ranges in space-saving SSOP packages with prices starting from $5.50 (1000-up, FOB USA).
