+2.5V, 1µA, ±15kV ESD-PROTECTED RS-232 TRANSCEIVERS FOR CELL PHONES AND PDAs

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-October 16, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3388E/MAX3389E RS-232 transceivers with added functionality, making them ideal for PDA and cell phone applications. These devices include three transmitters and two receivers required for data transmission and hot-sync functionality. The MAX3388E/MAX3389E feature a logic-level I/O pin for additional device-to-device handshaking and a 62 switch that can provide power to remote circuitry. The logic-level I/O is always active in the MAX3389E. For the MAX3388E, the logic-level output is placed in a high-impedance state while the part is in shutdown. All transmitter output and receiver input pins, as well as the switch and logic-level inputs, feature enhanced electrostatic-discharge (ESD) protection. The protection on these pins can withstand ±15kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge Method, ±8kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge Method, and ±15kV using the Human Body Model.

A proprietary, low-dropout transmitter output stage enables RS-232-compatible performance over a +2.35V to +3.0V supply range, using a dual-charge pump. These devices feature a 1µA shutdown mode in which the transmitter and receiver outputs are high impedance. The MAX3388E/MAX3389E allow operation in mixed-logic systems using VL, as the input and output logic levels are pin programmable. This eliminates the need for level shifters in mixed-logic voltage systems. These devices are guaranteed to run at a 460kbps data rate, and the charge pump requires only four small 0.1µF capacitors.

The MAX3388E/MAX3389E are available in both the commercial (0°C to +70°C) and extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature ranges, in a space-saving 24-pin TSSOP package. Prices start from $2.79 (1000-up, FOB USA).
