INDUSTRY'S SMALLEST 3.2Gbps ADAPTIVE CABLE EQUALIZER
Editor: The MAX3801 is a significant new product. It is the smallest 3.2Gbps adaptive cable equalizer and it can significantly reduce system interconnection costs.
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 15, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3801 adaptive equalizer, thereby enabling low-cost copper system interconnections at data rates up to 3.2Gbps. The MAX3801 is a +3.3V adaptive cable equalizer designed for coaxial and twin-axial cable point-to-point communications applications. The MAX3801 effectively extends the usable length of coaxial and twin-axial copper cable in high-frequency interconnect applications by equalizing differential or single-ended signals at data rates up to 3.2Gbps. It automatically adjusts to attenuation caused by skin effect levels of up to 30dB at 1.6GHz, making cables at less than $1.65 per meter, like 30m of RG179B or 90m of RG59, viable interconnect solutions. The MAX3801 also works well in high-speed printed circuit board applications.
The equalizer includes differential CML data inputs and outputs, a TTL loss-of-signal (LOS-bar) output, and a cable integrity monitor (CIM) output. All CML interfaces include on-chip terminations to reduce external component count. Typical power consumption is only 125mW.
The MAX3801 is available in a 24-pin QFN package (4mm x 4mm footprint) with exposed pad and operates from a 3.3V supply over a temperature range of 0°C to +85°C. The MAX3801 is priced at $8.50 (1000-up, factory direct, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
