DUAL, 6-BIT, WIDEBAND I/Q DIGITIZER DELIVERS 37dB SNR AT 800Msps SAMPLING RATE
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 29, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX105, the first dual, 6-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) capable of sampling I/Q signals up to 800Msps, the speed required by digital demodulators employed in high-data-rate point-to-point, satellite, and fiber communications receivers.
The MAX105 is optimized for applications demanding fast and precise digitizing of in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) baseband signals in low-order modulation, high-bandwidth receiver architectures. The MAX105's unique quantizer design converts the baseband analog I/Q components to digital LVDS outputs, while achieving a typical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 37dB at a 200MHz input frequency. The device delivers an integral nonlinearity (INL) of ±0.2LSB and differential nonlinearity (DNL) of ±0.25 LSB. An internal 6:12 output demultiplexer reduces the MAX105's full 800Mbps output to half that rate. The resulting time-interleaved output words are presented on two identical LVDS parallel 6-bit output ports.
Each of the MAX105's dual ADCs features a fully differential, full-power analog input bandwidth (-0.5dB) of 400MHz with nominal 5-kilohm input impedance and a low 1.5pF shunt input capacitance, simplifying interface requirements. The MAX105 channel-to-channel matching performance is typically 0.04dB gain, 0.1LSB offset, and 0.2° phase. Dynamic performance is 5.8 effective number of bits (ENOB) minimum, while digitizing a 200MHz analog input signal clocked at 800MHz. A fully differential comparator design and encoding circuits are employed to reduce out-of-sequence errors (thermometer bubbles and sparkle codes) and to ensure excellent bit-error rate (BER) and metastable performance of only one error per 1016 clock cycles.
The MAX105 operates on a single +5V supply with a nominal power dissipation of 2.6W. The output digital interface supply allows for flexible operation from +3V to +3.6V. The device is packaged in an 80-pin TQFP package with exposed pad and is specified for the extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. The MAX105 is priced at $35.95 (1000-up, FOB USA).
