3V, 622Mbps CLOCK AND DATA RECOVERY IC SURPASSES SDH/SONET REGENERATOR SPECIFICATIONS

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 2, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3676 622Mbps, +3.3V, clock-recovery and data-retiming IC with limiting amplifier. The MAX3676 is designed for both section-regenerator and terminal-receiver applications in SDH/SONET OC-48/STM-16 transmission systems, surpassing all ITU/Bellcore jitter specifications. This device forms a complete, high-performance 622Mbps receiver when combined with the MAX3665 transimpedance amplifier (future product; contact factory for availability) and the MAX3681 1:4 deserializer.

The MAX3676 operates from a single +3.3V to +5.0V supply, consuming only 237mW of power at 3.3V. The MAX3676's jitter generation performance surpasses the SDH/SONET specification by 8.0mUIRMS. Jitter tolerance at 1MHz exceeds the SDH/SONET specification by 0.54UIp-p. The MAX3675 offers selectable data inputs: One input accepts PECL levels, while the other accepts small-signal analog levels. The analog inputs access the limiting amplifier stage, which provides both a received-signal-strength indicator (RSSI) and a programmable-threshold loss-of-power (LOP) monitor. Selecting the PECL amplifier disables the limiting amplifier, conserving power. The fully integrated phase-locked loop (PLL) recovers a synchronous clock signal from the serial NRZ data input, which is retimed by the recovered clock. Differential PECL outputs are provided for both clock and data signals. A loss-of-lock (LOL) monitor is also incorporated as part of the fully integrated PLL.

Available in a 32-pin TQFP package as well as dice over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), the MAX3676 is priced from $15.00 (1000-up, factory direct, FOB USA). An evaluation kit (MAX3676EVKIT) is available.
