FIRST DUAL WAKE-ON-USB CURRENT-LIMITED SWITCH WITH AUTORESET
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 22, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1838, which is the first dual current-limited USB switch that permits the USB ports to remain on, at a lower current limit, when the system is in sleep mode. For example, when a notebook computer is in sleep mode, the main 5V supply is turned off, and the system runs from the backup supply to save power. The MAX1838 switches the USB ports over to the backup supply and limits the USB current to a level lower than the full 500mA. It allows the user to independently adjust the current limits of the two low-power switches down from the full 500mA USB limit.
A power-saving auto reset feature latches the switch off when a short-circuit condition exists and does not turn it back on until the fault condition is removed. A built-in 20ms fault blanking time allows momentary faults such as those caused by capacitive loads to be ignored by the microprocessor. The fault indicators are independent for the two switches.
The input range is 4V to 5.5V, and the part includes reverse-current and thermal overload protection.
The MAX1838EEE comes in a 16-pin QSOP package (which is the same size as an 8-pin SO), and is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $2.00 (1000-up, US recommended resale).
