DYNAMICALLY ADJUSTABLE SYNCHRONOUS STEP-DOWN CONTROLLER WITH INTEGRATED VOLTAGE POSITIONING FOR INTEL (IMVPII) NOTEBOOK CPUs
SUNNYVALE, CA-June 13, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1813, a buck controller that features a dynamically adjustable output, ultra-fast transient response, high DC accuracy, and high efficiency needed for the leading-edge CPU core power supplies. Maxims proprietary Quick PWM constant on-time PWM control scheme handles wide input/output voltage ratios with ease and provides 100ns "instant-on" response to load transients while maintaining a constant switching frequency.
The MAX1813 is designed specifically for CPU core applications requiring a voltage-positioned supply. The voltage positioning input, combined with a high DC accuracy control loop is used to implement a power supply that modified its output set point in response to the load current. This arrangement decreases full-load power dissipation and reduces the required number of output capacitors.
The output voltage is dynamically adjusted via the 5-bit DAC inputs over a range of 0.6V to 2.0V. Output slew rate control minimizes battery and inductor surge currents. With this precision circuit, VOUT slew rate can be tailored to a given application, providing a "just-in-time" arrival at the new DAC setting.
Another unique feature of the MAX1813 is an internal multiplexer that allows rapid switching between two 5-bit DAC settings with only five digital input pins, and can also select a low preset output voltage to support low-power processor suspend states.
The MAX1813 is available in a 28-pin QSOP package. All devices are screened for the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices for the MAX1813 start at $4.76 (1000-up FOB USA). A preassembled MAX1813_EVKIT (evaluation kit) is available with recommended external components to reduce design time.
