SYSTEM MONITOR PROVIDES DUAL REMOTE TEMPERATURE AND VOLTAGE FAULT DETECTION
SUNNYVALE, CA-September 6, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6655 and MAX6656 system monitors. Housed in small 16-pin QSOP packages, the MAX6655/MAX6656 measure system temperature and four external voltages. When a voltage or temperature measurement falls outside of a programmable limit threshold, an alarm output is asserted.
Communication with the device is carried out via a 2-wire serial interface accepting standard System Management Bus (SMBus) protocol. This interface is used to program the configuration of the MAX6655/MAX6656, including the temperature alarm threshold and under/overvoltage alarm thresholds.
The MAX6655/MAX6656 system supervisors have two remote-junction channels that measure temperature with 1°C accuracy (max) when the remote-junction is between +60°C and +100°C, and 3°C accuracy (max) when the remote-junction is between 0°C and +120°C. Each device also has an on-chip sensor that measures the temperature of the die itself with ±1.5°C accuracy (max) from +60°C to +100°C, and 3°C accuracy (max) from 0°C to +120°C. All temperature measurements have 11-bit, 0.125°C resolution.
In addition, the MAX6655/MAX6656 monitor four external voltages with 1% accuracy. The MAX6655 monitors +12V, +5.0V, and +2.5V voltages as well as its own 3.3V supply voltage. The MAX6656 monitors +12V, +3.3V, and +2.5V voltages and its own 5.0V supply voltage.
The MAX6655/MAX6656 measure temperature and voltage continuously. In addition, temperature and voltage data from the last completed conversion can be read at any time. Individual temperature and voltage measurements can be disabled.
When a temperature or voltage measurement falls outside of the user-programmed high- and low-limit thresholds, the MAX6655/MAX6656 generate a latched interrupt output at the ALERT pin. If desired, individual interrupts can be masked out. In addition, the OVERT comparator output asserts when the temperature exceeds the programmed high limit and will deassert only when the temperature falls below the programmed low limit.
The MAX6655/MAX6656 operate with a supply voltage between 3.0V and 5.5V. Supply current varies between 17µA and 550µA depending on the rate of conversion, and standby current is 3µA.
