DALLAS, TX-January 22, 2002-Dallas Semiconductor introduces the DS1921H/DS1921Z Thermochron iButtons, the newest additions to Dallas Semiconductor’s innovative line of rugged, self-contained data loggers. These devices can go just about anywhere or be attached to almost anything due to their small size (16mm diameter, 5.8mm tall—approximately the size of a stack of five dimes). They are extremely durable, thanks to the stainless-steel iButton packaging. They measure temperature and record the result in a tamper-evident memory section to prevent fraud. The recording is done at a user-defined rate, both as a direct storage of temperature values, as well as in the form of a histogram. Up to 2048 temperature values taken at periodic intervals ranging from 1 minute to 255 minutes can be stored. The resolution of the temperature values is 1/8°C with an accuracy of ±1°C. The histogram provides 64 data bins at a resolution of 1/2°C. The temperature range of the DS1921H is +15°C to +46°C, offering high-resolution recording of readings near human body temperature (+37°C). The DS1921Z has a -5°C to +26°C range for high resolution recording of readings near 0°C.
If the temperature leaves a user-programmable range, the DS1921H/DS1921Z also records when this happened, for how long the temperature stayed outside the permitted range, and if the temperature was too high or too low. An additional 512 bytes of read/write nonvolatile (NV) memory allow information storage for the object associated with the DS1921H/DS1921Z. Data is transferred serially through the 1-Wire protocol, which requires only a single data lead and a ground return. Every DS1921H/DS1921Z is factory lasered with a guaranteed unique 64-bit registration number that allows for absolute traceability. The durable stainless steel package is highly resistant to environmental hazards such as dirt, moisture, and shock. Accessories permit the DS1921H/DS1921Z to be mounted on almost any object, including containers, pallets, and bags. Applications include monitoring temperature-sensitive products during shipping, such as fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and blood products. They can also provide a simple means to track or monitor processes that have temperatures centered at approximately 0°C or +37°C.
The DS1921H/DS1921Z can be reused for many years and record over one million temperature measurements, but cost only $10.35 in quantities of 100 (FOB USA).
