Note to Editor: The MAX3802 is a significant new product. It is the first four-channel 3.2Gbps adaptive cable equalizer, and it can significantly reduce system interconnection costs.
SUNNYVALE, CA-February 26, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products builds upon its industry-leading adaptive equalizer portfolio with the introduction of the MAX3802 quad adaptive equalizer. Maxim? adaptive equalization algorithm, already proven in the MAX3800 and MAX3801 equalizers, enables low-cost copper system interconnections up to 3.2Gbps and effectively extends the usable length of coaxial and twinaxial copper cable in point-to-point communications applications. The MAX3802 contains four independent 3.3V adaptive cable equalizers and four independent cable drivers on a single chip. It automatically adjusts to attenuation caused by skin-effect levels of up to 30dB at 1.6GHz, making inexpensive 30m cables viable interconnect solutions.

The cable driver accepts differential or single-ended current-mode logic (CML) input data at rates up to 3.2Gbps, and it features adjustable CML output levels between 445mV to 825mV. The equalizer includes differential CML data inputs and outputs, a TTL loss-of-signal (LOS) output, and cable integrity monitor (CIM) output. All CML interfaces include on-chip terminations to reduce external component count. When the cable driver is set to maximum output voltage swing and the equalizer is compensating for 30dB of loss, typical power consumption is only 181mW per channel (725mW total). The driver can be disconnected from the power supply when it is not needed, reducing supply current.

The MAX3802 is available in a 68-pin QFN package with exposed pad and operates from a 3.3V supply over the 0°C to +85°C temperature range. Prices start at $29.87 (1000-up, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
