4-CHANNEL INTERCONNECT MUX/DEMUX WITH CLOCK GENERATOR SIMPLIFIES RACK-TO-RACK INTERCONNECTS
SUNNYVALE, CA-November 10, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the expansion of its system interconnect product line with the MAX3831 +3.3V, 2.5Gbps, SDH/SONET, 4-channel interconnect mux/demux with clock generator. The MAX3831 is a 4:1 multiplexer and 1:4 demultiplexer that allows 2.5Gbps data to be sent over a pair of wires or fibers connecting telecommunications equipment. High-speed rack-to-rack shelf-to-shelf and card-to-card interconnections between equipment can now be made using a single pair of copper cables or fibers, thereby saving space, power, and money. Applications include SDH/SONET backplanes, dense digital cross-connects, and intra-rack/subrack interconnects. When combined with the MAX3876 2.5Gbps clock and data recovery IC, the MAX3831 becomes an ideal solution for simplifying system interconnects without sacrificing testability.
Operating from a single +3.3V supply, the MAX3831 consumes only 1.45W of power. It has excellent jitter performance: random jitter of 2.5psRMS and deterministic jitter of 8psp-p. The MAX3831 uses a parallel 622Mbps SONET/SDH LVDS interface, and the 2.488Gbps serial CML data streams interface to an optical or electrical driver. A 10-bit elastic buffer accommodates ±7.5ns skew between any parallel data input and the 155.52MHz external reference clock. An internal frame detector looks for a 622Mbps SONET/SDH framing pattern and rolls the demux to maintain proper channel assignment at the outputs. A TTL loss-of-frame monitor is included. The MAX3831 also provides a 622MHz LVDS clock output. An on-chip pattern generator provides high-speed built-in self-testing (BIST), and system loopback and line loopback modes provide system test flexibility.
Available in a 64-pin TQFP exposed-paddle package in the upper-commercial (0°C to +85°C) temperature range, the MAX3831 is priced from $29.95 (1000-up, factory direct, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available.
