SUNNYVALE, CA-September 3, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces (NASDAQ: MXIM) the MAX5038 (fixed output voltage) and MAX5041 (adjustable output voltage) dual-phase, parallelable PWM controllers for the design of high-output-current, compact power supplies with minimal external components. These devices include an internal voltage regulator, which allows operation from a 5V, 12V, or 24V power bus. The MAX5038 is available with fixed 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, or 3.3V output voltages. The MAX5041's output voltage can be externally adjusted from 1.0V to 3.3V.

The MAX5038/MAX5041 have 4A integrated MOSFET drivers and 1W package power dissipation capability that allow up to 52A output current. Moreover, multiple DC-DC controller modules can be paralleled to achieve higher output currents in units of 52A per module. The average current-mode control scheme of the MAX5038/MAX5041 allows designers to achieve current-limit as well as current-sharing accuracy of ±5%. This results in small inductor and small (or fewer) external MOSFETs, thus reducing power-supply size and cost. The ±5% current-sharing accuracy is maintained between the phases and paralleled modules. In addition, 180-degree, out-of-phase operation reduces input capacitance requirements, further reducing power-supply size and cost. The ±5% accurate internal oscillator frequency is pin selectable at 250kHz or 500kHz per phase, which results in 500kHz or 1MHz effective switching frequency at the output.

The MAX5038's DC output voltage accuracy is guaranteed at ±0.8% over the rated operating temperature range, while the MAX5041's (adjustable output voltage version) output feedback reference voltage is guaranteed at ±0.8% over the rated operating temperature range. The active adaptive voltage-positioning circuit of the devices not only provides excellent load-transient response, but also maximizes efficiency by reducing power loss in the high-current PC board traces. An efficiency of up to 93% at high currents has been demonstrated using the MAX5038/MAX5041. Other features include external frequency synchronization, phase-shifted clock output, true differential remote output-voltage sensing, and thermal shutdown.

The MAX5038/MAX5041 operate over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range and are available in a surface-mount 28-pin SSOP package. For a similar part with an Intel VRM9.0 compliant 5-bit VID programmable output, refer to the MAX5037. Prices start at $2.48 (1000-up, FOB USA).
