(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX4080/MAX4081 low-cost, high-side, current-sense amplifiers, which handle voltages up to 76V and accurately monitor currents in automotive, telecom, backplane, and other high-voltage applications. The MAX4080 measures current flowing in one direction. The bidirectional MAX4081 measures charge and discharge currents, making it ideal for use with the new 42V automobile batteries.
The MAX4081 uses an external reference to set the zero-current null voltage. For example, if REF is 5V, charging current is represented by an output voltage from 5V to VCC while discharge current is given from 5V to ground. When measuring OUT with respect to REF, the IC continuously monitors the transition from charge to discharge and gives an accurate bidirectional output in a single-supply system without the need for a separate polarity pin.
The MAX4080/MAX4081 feature an input common-mode voltage range up to 76V, low 100µA supply current, low 100µV offset voltage (to allow a wide dynamic range), and 0.1% full-scale gain accuracy. High-side current sensing does not interfere with the ground path of the load being measured. The wide 4.5V to 76V input common-mode range is independent of the supply voltage. An external current-sense resistor is used along with three gain versions (F/T/S = 5V/V, 20V/V, or 60V/V) to achieve maximum flexibility.
The MAX4080/MAX4081 are specified over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) and are available in 8-pin µMAX or SO packages. Prices start at $0.85 (1000-up, FOB USA).
